➣ Στα τελειώματα του 1969 σχηματίσθηκαν στην Νέα Υόρκη οι Cactus από δύο πρώην μέλη των Vanilla Fudge: τον μπασίστα Tim Bogert και το ντράμερ Carmine Appice. Βασική τους επιλογή για κιθαρίστας ήταν ο Jeff Beck, ο οποίος έπεσε θύμα τροχαίου με αποτέλεσμα η μπάντα να καταλήξει στον Jim McCarty.

Οι Cactus "ολοκληρώθηκαν" με την προσθήκη του τραγουδιστή των Amboy Dukes, Rusty Day (Russell Edward Davidson το "κανονικό ονοματεπώνυμό του). Η μπάντα έμεινε ενεργή μέχρι το 1972 κυκλοφορώντας τέσσερις δίσκους ("Cactus" 1970, "One Way...Or Another" 1971, "Restrictions" 1971, "'Ot 'n' Sweaty" 1972).

Με την διάλυση της μπάντας οι Bogert - Appice κατάφεραν να συνεργαστούν τελικά με τον Jeff Beck δημιουργώντας τους Beck, Bogert & Appice. Στα 70ς έγιναν δύο απόπειρες "αναβίωσης" των Cactus.

Αρχικά από τον πληκτρά Duane Hitchings (έπαιζε στον τελευταίο τους δίσκο) που δημιούργησε τους New Cactus Band κυκλοφορώντας ένα album ("Son of Cactus" 1973) κι εν συνεχεία από τον τραγουδιστή Rusty Day το 1976. Το εγχείρημα "κράτησε" μέχρι το 1979.

Το 2006 οι (αποκαλούμενοι και Αμερικανοί Led Zeppelin) Cactus επανασυνδέθηκαν για κάποιες συναυλίες και τελικά συνεχίζουν μέχρι τις ημέρες μας. Η επανένωση είχε (και) δισκογραφικό αποτέλεσμα τέσσερα full length albums, το "Cactus V" (2006), "Black Dawn" (2016), το "Tightrope" (2021) συν τον δίσκο "Temple of Blues - Influences & Friends".

➣ Η Melanie Anne Safka Schekeryk (ή "σκέτο" Melanie η Melanie Safka) ήταν Αμερικανίδα τραγουδίστρια. Γεννήθηκε τον Φεβρουάριο του 1947 και απεβίωσε στις αρχές του τρέχοντος έτους (23 Ιανουαρίου 2024). Έμεινε γνωστή ως "the First Lady of Woodstock".

Το ντεμπούτο της στην δισκογραφία ήταν το single "Beautiful People" που κυκλοφόρησε το 1967, ενώ έμεινε ενεργή δισκογραφικά μέχρι και φέτος (βλ. το single "People in the Front Row", το οποίο αποτελεί μία εναλλακτική εκδοχή του αυθεντικού τραγουδιού που "βγήκε" το 1968). Η Melanie είχε επιχειρήσει μία ακουστική διασκευή του τραγουδιού του Jimi Hendrix "Purple Haze" στον δίσκο της "Silver Anniversary" που κυκλοφόρησε το 1993.

➣ Jimi Hendrix (Johnny Allen Hendrix): χρειάζεται άραγε ειδικό κείμενο για να σας συστήσω τον "δαίμονα" της ηλεκτρικής κιθάρας; Γεννήθηκε στις 27 Νοεμβρίου 1942 στο Σιάτλ και απεβίωσε στις 18 Σεπτεμβρίου 1970 στο Κένσινγκτον.

Curtis Knight and the Squires, Jimmy James and the Blue Flames, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Band of Gypsys. Άνοιξε νέους δρόμους στον τρόπο που παίζεται η ηλεκτρική κιθάρα και στον τρόπο που χρησιμοποιούμε το συγκεκριμένο μουσικό όργανο.

➺ Που (και πως) συναντιούνται οι δρόμοι των τριών παραπάνω μουσικών οντοτήτων; Οι δύο πρώτοι διασκευάζουν το (υπερκλασικό) "Purple Haze" του τρίτου, με το δελτίο τύπου να μας δίνει τις λεπτομέρειες:

Δελτίο τύπου: «Classic rock legends Cactus join Melanie for a pile-driving “Purple Haze”. On paper, it’s one of the unlikeliest unions you could imagine. On the one hand, there’s Melanie - the First Lady of Woodstock, who was indeed the first unaccompanied female performer to set foot on stage that weekend, and one of just two to do so all festival long.

And on the other, there’s Cactus, the hard rocking leviathan formed by legendary drummer Carmine Appice in 1969, and whose latest album Temple Of The Blues: Influences And Friends links them up with the likes of Ted Nugent, Dee Snider, Pat Travers and more.

And, on the third hand (because why not?), there’s Jimi Hendrix, whose “Purple Haze’ stands as one of the defining statements in all of rock history. What could possibly go wrong?

Melanie originally recorded “Purple Haze” back in the mid-1990s for her Silver Anniversary retrospective album. But, though she kept it acoustic, the electricity that runs through her performance literally screamed out for a band.

Or, as Carmine puts it, ““After knowing Melanie’s other doings and releases, when I hear this version of her and the screams she did... it blew me away. It was easy to put a kick ass Cactus band track... behind her. It does kick butt...”

There’s history behind it, as well - both Cactus and Melanie were stars of the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival, and so was Jimi Hendrix. They didn’t play together at the time, of course. But imagine if they had? “Purple Haze” might well have been the result.

With Appice joined here by Cactus band mates Tony Franklin (bass) and Artie Dillon (guitar), this breathtakingly audacious performance is out today on all the usual streaming platforms. And it doesn’t matter what you might be expecting to hear. The reality is very, very different.»
