Το φθινόπωρο του 1982 ο Ronnie James Dio (10 Ιουλίου 1942 - 16 Μαΐου 2010) αποχώρησε από τους Black Sabbath για να ξεκινήσει σόλο καριέρα. (Το πως και το γιατί επήλθε το "διαζύγιο" είναι υποθέτω γνωστό.)

Μαζί του ο drummer Vinny Appice, ο μπασίστας Jimmy Bain και ο κιθαρίστας Jake E. Lee, ο οποίος -μετά από έναν μήνα- αντικαταστάθηκε από τον Vivian Campbell. Τον Μάιο του 1983 κυκλοφόρησε το ντεμπούτο της νεοσύστατης μπάντας υπό τον τίτλο "Holy Diver" και τα υπόλοιπα είναι (heavy metal) ιστορία.

Η δισκογραφική συνέχεια δόθηκε το καλοκαίρι του επόμενου έτους (1984). "The Last in Line" ο τίτλος του δεύτερου full length album του (των) Dio και δεν νομίζω ότι χρειάζονται περισσότερες συστάσεις. Έναν μήνα νωρίτερα το ομότιτλο τραγούδι είχε κυκλοφορήσει ως δωδεκάιντσο single (με τις live ηχογραφήσεις του "Stand Up and Shout" και του "Straight Through the Heart" στην δεύτερη πλευρά του βινυλίου, στο επτάιντσο δεν υπάρχει το "Straight Through the Heart").

Ο τίτλος του εν λόγω δίσκου "βάφτισε" το συγκρότημα Last In Line, το οποίο δημιουργήθηκε πριν από μία ντουζίνα έτη από τους Vivian Campbell, Vinny Appice, Jimmy Bain (R.I.P.) και συνεχίζει ακάθεκτο μέχρι τις ημέρες μας.
