Το έτος 1969 ήταν άκρως παραγωγικό και δημιουργικό για τους Deep Purple. Αρχικά ο (καταπληκτικός) δίσκος "Deep Purple III" που σηματοδότησε το τέλος μίας εποχής κι εν συνεχεία το ("μυθικό") "Concerto for Group and Orchestra" που σηματοδότησε το ξεκίνημα μία νέας.

Ο τρίτος δίσκος των Deep Purple κυκλοφόρησε στις 21 Ιουνίου του 1969 από την εταιρεία Tetragrammaton στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες της Αμερικής και τον Νοέμβριο του ιδίου έτους από την Harvest στην Μεγάλη Βρετανία και στην υπόλοιπη Ευρώπη.

Είναι το τελευταίο albun του Βρετανικού συγκροτήματος με τον Rod Evans στα φωνητικά και τον Nick Simper στο μπάσο. Τον Ιούλιο του 1969 αντικαταστάθηκαν από τους Ian Gillan και Roger Glover αντίστοιχα. Το δεύτερο τραγούδι της πρώτης πλευράς του βινυλίου (το υπέροχο "Blind") αποτελεί σύνθεση του Jon Lord...
