Το μακρινό 1999 ο πασίγνωστος μουσικός παραγωγός Fredrik Nordström (βρίσκουμε την "υπογραφή" του σε δίσκους συγκροτημάτων όπως οι HammerFall, Jorn, Memory Garden, Evergrey, InnerWish, Lefay, Majesty, Dark Tranquillity, Madder Mortem, Iron Fire, Cypher Seer, Powerwolf, In Flames, Septicflesh, Opeth, Dimmu Borgir, Arch Enemy, Wolf, Crystal Eyes, Mystic Prophecy, Delain, Rotting Christ, Elvenking, Tad Morose, Narnia, At the Gates, Dragonland, Sabaton, Pagan's Mind, Firewind, Spiritual Beggars, On Thorns I Lay κλπ) απολάμβανε τις διακοπές του σε κάποιο Ελληνικό νησί.

Στο μυαλό του υπήρχε -καθώς πέραν από παραγωγός είναι και μουσικός- η δημιουργία ενός συγκροτήματος. Κάπου εκεί γνώρισε τον ανερχόμενο κιθαρίστα Gus G. και το "γλυκό έδεσε"! DragonSlayer το αρχικό όνομα του νέου μουσικού σχήματος, αλλά μετά την διαφωνία της δισκογραφικής εταιρείας Century Media Records επιλέχθηκε το Dream Evil (από το ομότιτλο album και τραγούδι του Dio) και το "DragonSlayer" χρησιμοποιήθηκε για να "βαφτίσει" το ντεμπούτο τους, το οποίο κυκλοφόρησε την άνοιξη του 2002.
