Μα ακόμη βόλτα στο παρελθόν με όχημα την μουσική των Deep Purple. Στην παρούσα ανάρτηση θα γυρίσουμε πίσω στο μακρινό 1970 (28 Ιουλίου) με την θρυλική μπάντα να αποδίδει "ζωντανά" στο Λονδίνο (South Bank Queen Elizabeth Hall UK) το τραγούδι "Mandrake Root" για λογαρισμό της Βρετανική τηλεοπτικής σειράς "Southbank TV".

Ήταν το πρώτο τραγούδι το οποίο ηχογράφησαν οι Deep Purple στην καριέρα τους και παράλληλα ήταν το μουσικό κομμάτι με το οποίο έκλειναν τις συναυλίες τους μέχρι και το 1971. Κατά βάση το τραγούδι αποτελείται από σόλο κιθάρας και πλήκτρων δίνοντας έμφαση (και) στα τύμπανα.

Παρά το γεγονός ότι η διάρκεια της στούντιο εκτέλεσης του ήταν έξι λεπτά στις ζωντανές εμφανίσεις των Deep Purple αποτελούσε βάση για να αυτοσχεδιάσουν ο Blackmore και ο Lord, φτάνοντας σε διάρκεια ακόμη και τα τριάντα λεπτά. Απολαμβάνουμε τους Ritchie Blackmore, Roger Glover, Jon Lord, Ian Gillan και Ian Paice επί το έργον. Η μπάντα βρίσκεται σε πολύ μεγάλη φόρμα...

Ian Gillan spoke to Melody maker at that time:

"The Southbank thing was great, we got top billing above Blue Mink and the Settlers. The other groups played to back tracks, but we took all our gear and played live. Of course, as usual, the audience was made up of a lot of older people. Anyway we played "Child in Time", which is a pretty quiet one for us.

It was funny - when we finished we said we were going to do a loud one, and half the audience walked out. Still, we were pleased to do it, the producer, Brian Izzard, gave us a lot of freedom and a half hour set. We didn't give a monkey about the people who walked out."»
