Το 1989 ο Don Dokken και ο George Lynch πήραν καλλιτεχνικό "διαζύγιο" και οι Dokken μπήκαν στον "πάγο" (για μία τετραετία). Ο Don ακολουθήσε ατομική καριέρα και ο George δημιούργησε τους Lynch Mob. Το solo album του Don Dokken έφερε τον τίτλο "Up from the Ashes" και κυκλοφόρησε το φθινόπωρο του 1990.

Μαζί του μία πλειάδα έμπειρων μουσικών όπως ο John Norum (Europe), ο Billy White (Watchtower), ο Peter Baltes (Accept) και ο Mikkey Dee (King Diamond, Motörhead). Στον δίσκο συμμετέχουν επίσης ο Glenn Hughes (κάνει δεύτερα φωνητικά στο τραγούδι "When Love Finds a Fool"), ο Tony Franklin (βλ. την εισαγωγή με το μπάσο στο "Stay" και ο drummer Ken Mary (στο "The Hunger").

Μετά την κυκλοφορία του δίσκου "Up from the Ashes" ο Don Dokken δημιούργησε και δεύτερο solo album το 1993 ("Dysfunctional"). Ο John Kalodner του πρότεινε να επιστρέψει ο George Lynch και ο δίσκος να κυκλοφορήσει με το όνομα του συγκροτήματος (Dokken) κι όχι ως προσωπικό του Don, αλλά αυτή είναι μία άλλη ιστορία, η οποία (ίσως) ειπωθεί κάποια άλλη στιγμή...
