Ο Týr είναι ο θεός του πολέμου και της μάχης στο Σκανδιναβικό μυθολογικό πάνθεον, ο οποίος απεικονίζεται ως μονόχειρας. Κάποια στιγμή οι θεοί αποφάσισαν να αλυσοδέσουν τον λύκο Fenris, αλλά το κτήνος έσπαγε όποια αλυσίδα του έβαζαν.

Εν τέλει οι νάνοι έφτιαξαν μία μαγική λουρίδα, την Γκλέιπνιρ, από υλικά όπως γένια γυναίκας και ρίζες βουνού. Όμως ο Φένριρ υποψιάστηκε την εξαπάτηση των θεών και αρνήθηκε να δεθεί εκτός αν κάποιος εξ αυτών τοποθετούσε το δεξί του χέρι στο στόμα του.

Ο Týr συμφώνησε και οι υπόλοιποι θεοί έδεσαν τον λύκο. Όταν ο Fenris κατάλαβε πως είχε εξαπατηθεί έκοψε το χέρι του θεού. Στην διάρκεια του Ράγκναροκ ο Týr θα σκοτώσει και θα σκοτωθεί από το Γκαρμ, τον φύλακα σκύλο του Χελχέιμ.

Τον θεό Týr σύστησαν στο μεταλλικό κοινό οι Black Sabbath στα τέλη των 80s με τον (εξαιρετικό) ομότιτλο δίσκο τους. Το όνομά του ενέπνευσε αρκετά heavy metal συγκροτήματα. Τουλάχιστον μία ντουζίνα μπάντες πήραν τ' όνομά τους από τον μονόχειρα θεό.

Μεταξύ άλλων και ετούτοι οι Βίκινγκς απ' τα νησιά Φερόε. Τον Νοέμβριο του 2000 κυκλοφόρησαν το παρθενικό τους demo και κάπως έτσι ξεκίνησε η δισκογραφική τους διαδρομή που αριθμεί οκτώ "ολοκληρωμένους" δίσκους.

Ο δεύτερος (χρονικά) εμπνέεται από τον "Έρικ τον Ερυθρό" (παρατσούκλι που απέκτησε λόγω του χρώματος των μαλλιών και της γενειάδας του). Πρόκειται για τον πρώτο εποικιστή της Γροιλανδίας. Όταν μάλιστα ρωτήθηκε γιατί ονόμασε την νέα χώρα "Πράσινη Γη" (Groland) αφού ήταν καλυμμένη με πάγους, απάντησε ότι αυτό το όνομα θα προσέλκυε νέους αποίκους...
