Νοέμβριος του 1986 και το heavy metal βρίσκει μία από τις κορυφώσεις του! Ο τρίτος δίσκος των Fates Warning, υπό τον τίτλο "Awaken the Guardian", κυκλοφορεί. Βελτιώνει, εξελίσσει και κορυφώνει τις τάσεις των δύο πρώτων δίσκων ("Night on Bröcken", "The Spectre Within") της μπάντας και κλείνει με θριαμβευτικό τρόπο τον πρώτο καλλιτεχνικό κύκλο των Fates Warning.

Βαρύ, έντεχνο, στριφνό, εγκεφαλικό US Power βασισμένο στο δίπολο του Δημήτρη Μαθιού (από την μία) και του John Arch (από την άλλη). Μάλιστα η σφραγίδα του δεύτερου τόσο στις (υπερβατικές) ερμηνείες, όσο και στις φωνητικές μελωδίες (και φυσικά στους στίχους) είναι απόλυτα επιδραστική στην πρώτη περίοδο των Fates.

Δεν μπορεί να είναι τυχαίο ή συμπτωματικό ότι με την φυγή του (το 1987) προέκυψε μία τελείως διαφορετική (αν και εξίσου ενδιαφέρουσα) μπάντα. Εν κατακλείδι ο δίσκος "Awaken the Guardian" (με το υπέροχο εξώφυλλο του Ιωάννη Βασιλόπουλου) είναι από τα albums που ορίζουν ύφος, ήχο, στυλ, αισθητική. Είναι ο ορισμός του US Power Metal και παράλληλα μία από τις καλύτερες προσθήκες της δισκοθήκης μου διαχρονικά...
