Η αλλαγή της δεκαετίας (από τα 70ς στα 80ς) βρήκε έτοιμους τους Rush, οι οποίοι προσαρμόστηκαν εύκολα στα νέα (ηχητικά κι όχι μόνο) δεδομένα των 80ς. Μπορεί οι (κλασικοί τους) δίσκοι στα 70ς να παραμένουν απλησίαστοι (ακόμη και από τους ίδιους), όμως η μετάβαση έγινε και ήταν ομαλή. Το "Moving Pictures" (που κυκλοφόρησε τον Φεβρουάριο του 1981) περιλαμβάνει πιθανά το πιο δημοφιλές τραγούδι των Καναδών progsters, το (εναρκτήριο) "Tom Sawyer".
Στην παρούσα ανάρτηση θα σταθούμε στο εν λόγω μουσικό κομμάτι, το οποίο συνέθεσαν ο Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, ενώ τους στίχους έγραψε ο Neil Peart σε συνεργασία με τον Pye Dubois (του συγκροτήματος Max Webster, ο οποίος υπογράφει τους στίχους και σε τρία ακόμη τραγούδια των Rush) και θα ακούσουμε την "ζωντανή" εκτέλεσή του από την επανακυκλοφορία του δίσκου υπό τον τίτλο "Moving Pictures (40th Anniversary)", η οποία περιλαμβάνει ολόκληρη την συναυλία τους στο Τορόντο στις 25 Μαρτίου 1981.
Όσον αφορά το τραγούδι ("Tom Sawyer") ο Neil Peart είχε πει το 1985:
«Tom Sawyer was a collaboration between myself and Pye Dubois, an excellent lyricist who wrote the lyrics for Max Webster. His original lyrics were kind of a portrait of a modern day rebel, a free-spirited individualist striding through the world wide-eyed and purposeful. I added the themes of reconciling the boy and man in myself, and the difference between what people are and what others perceive them to be-namely me, I guess.»
Τον Ιούλιο του 2007 ο Alex Lifeson δήλωσε για το κιθαριστικό σόλο του "Tom Sawyer" σε συνέντευξή του στο περιοδικό "Guitar World":
«I winged it. Honest! I came in, did five takes, then went off and had a cigarette. I'm at my best for the first two takes; after that, I overthink everything and I lose the spark. Actually, the solo you hear is composed together from various takes.»
