Μετά την κυκλοφορία του ομώνυμου ντεμπούτου τους (το οποίο όρισε ουσιαστικά ένα νέο μουσικό ιδίωμα) οι Black Sabbath ηχογράφησαν (την ίδια χρονιά) στα "Regent Sound Studios" του Λονδίνου τον διάδοχό του υπό τον τίτλο "War Pigs".

Η δισκογραφική εταιρεία τους ζήτησε ένα επιπλέον τραγούδι με τους Sabbs να μην έχουν κάποιο έτοιμο πέραν του "Paranoid", το οποίο δεν ήταν από τα... αγαπημένα τους! Τελικά όχι μόνο μπήκε στον δίσκο, όχι μόνο "βάφτισε" τον δίσκο, αλλά έγινε και το πιο επιτυχημένο και αναγνωρίσιμο τραγούδι τους. Δελτίο τύπου: «This is a truly unique and legendary performance on TopPop of Black Sabbath, the British heavy metal band. The band was formed in 1968 by Ozzy Osbourne (vocals), Tony Iommi (lead guitar), Terence "Geezer" Butler (bass guitar) and Bill Ward (drums).

In this line up they recorded in 1970 the album 'Paranoid' with the single of the same name. This album reached #1 in the album charts in the UK and the Netherlands and #2 in Germany and Denmark. The single reached #4 in the UK, #3 in Austria, #1 in Germany and #2 in Switzerland.
