Ο Ronnie Van Zant διασκέδαζε σε ένα μπαρ μηχανόβιων στο Τζάκσονβιλ (Jacksonville). Εκεί που χόρευε με κάποια γυναίκα αισθάνθηκε μία κάνη όπλου να τον σημαδεύει. Ήταν ο σύζυγος (της γυναίκας με την οποία χόρευε).

Στον γυρισμό για το σπίτι του ο Ronnie είχε ήδη φτιάξει τους σχετικούς στίχους και κάπως έτσι προέκυψε το τραγούδι των Lynyrd Skynyrd "Gimme Three Steps", το οποίο πρωτακούσαμε στο ομώνυμο ντεμπούτο των Αμερικανών southern rockers που κυκλοφόρησε το 1973.
