Astolat - Rex Nemorensis (audio)

«Today we unveil the single "Rex Nemorensis" from our second EP "Aokigahara". We’ve decided to release this two-parter in its’ entirety. The first part, which features Lisa Gustavsson on vocals, is about Rex Nemorensis, a priesthood in Ariccia in the ancient Roman empire which was claimed by trial by combat. The one who won the priesthood was effectively king, but the throne would always come at the price of oneself being killed one day - making for a very uneasy story.

The song continues on with an instrumental inspired by the movie Melancholia by Lars von Trier. The song is about the end of the Earth and a feeling of inevitable destruction - like a giant wave approaching of which there is no escape, only the possibility to make peace with and embrace ones demise. This greater force breaks the cycle of the strife for power as well as the cycle of rebirth of the goddess Diana - effectively killing gods and men. The entire EP, consisting of the six songs listed in the previous post, will be released in July.»

Rex Nemorensis-Part I: Rex Nemorensis (Based on a poem by Baron Macaulay I)

Those trees in whose dim shadow
The ghastly priest doth reign
The priest who slew the slayer,
And shall himself be slain.

Rex Nemorensis (king of the grove)
Rex Nemorensis (priest of Diana at Nemi)
Rex Nemorensis (king of the grove)
Rex Nemorensis (a crown of thorns)

The highest price for power I have paid
For my vanity a truly pyrrhic trade
King for days or for years, but now the sun has set
Watching it bleed on the horizon fills me with regret

The black-robed ruler finds no peace
As he slumbers forever in Ariccian woods
The golden bough has sealed his fate
Watch the fall -- and rebirth of a god!

Those trees in whose dim shadow
The ghastly priest doth reign
The priest who slew the slayer,
And shall himself be slain.

Rex Nemorensis - Part II: To Embrace the End (instrumental)

Rex Nemorensis was a priesthood in Arricia in the ancient Roman Empire. The priesthood was obtained by trial by combat and the story I wish to tell through the music in the first part of the song is about a man who manages to become the priest/king. Needless to say he finds his throne to be very uncomfortable. After the story has come full circle the second part of the song begins. The concept and the overall mood is inspired by the movie Melancholia by Lars von Trier.

Melancholia is about the end of the Earth and the mood I've tried to set is hopelessness in resisting an overwhelming power -- like a huge wave travelling at you faster than you can run and the knowledge that all you can do is to embrace the fact that you will be swallowed by it. I chose to have this end to the song partly because it fitted very well musically, but also because it implies that the circle which seems to only be repeating itself in the first part eventually comes to an end when a greater force undoes the cycle of events entirely.
