A New Earth

«Και σαν συμπληρωθεί το έργο της δικαιοσύνης μία καινούρια γη, πιο πράσινη και πιο ωραία, θενά υψωθεί από τα σπλάχνα των κυμάτων κι ένας νέος ουρανός θα σχηματισθεί... Μία θυγατέρα του Σούνα κι ένας γιος του φεγγαριού κι η μία κι ο άλλος ωραιότεροι από τους γονιούς τους, θα ξαναπάρουνε τον δρόμο τους της μέρας και της νύχτας...

Ένας άνδρας και μία γυναίκα, ο Λιφ και η Φιλθραζίρ, που θα έχουν επιζήσει από την πυρπόληση του κόσμου (κρυμμένοι σ' ένα ύψωμα, όπου θενά τράφουνταν από την δρόσο), θενά γεννήσουν μία καινούρια ράτσα ανθρώπων.

Οι Θεοί θενά μαζευτούνε πάλι στους κάμπους της Ίντα, θενά μιλήσουνε για τα γεγονότα τα περασμένα και θενά βρούνε στην χλόη τις αρχαίες πλάκες με την ρουνική γραφή, που σύμφωνα μ' αυτές θα κυβερνήσουνε τον κόσμο. Τότε η γη θα παράγει από μόνη της και χωρίς καλλιέργεια... Τα δένδρα θάναι γιομάτα καρπούς. Οι κάμποι λουλούδια...»

ΥΓ.2 «Gylfaginning chapter 53 begins with Gangleri asking if any of the gods will survive, and if there will be anything left of the earth or the sky. High responds that the earth will appear once more from the sea, beautiful and green, where self-sown crops grow. The field Iðavöllr exists where Asgard once was, and, there, untouched by Surtr's flames, Víðarr and Váli reside.

Now possessing their father's hammer Mjolnir, Thor's sons Móði and Magni will meet them there, and, coming from Hel, Baldr, and Höðr also arrive. Together, they all sit and recount memories, later finding the gold game pieces the Æsir once owned. Völuspá stanza 51 is then quoted. High reveals that two humans, Líf and Lífþrasir, will have also survived the destruction by hiding in the wood Hoddmímis holt.

These two survivors consume the morning dew for sustenance, and from their descendants the world will be repopulated. Vafþrúðnismál stanza 45 is then quoted. The personified sun, Sól, will have a daughter at least as beautiful as she, and this daughter will follow the same path as her mother. Vafþrúðnismál stanza 47 is quoted, and so ends the foretelling of Ragnarök in Gylfaginning.»

ΥΓ.3 Το τραγούδι: "A New Earth" από τους Einherjer. Διαπραγματεύεται το ίδιο θέμα. Μία από τις συγκλονιστικότερες συνθέσεις στην ιστορία του επικού heavy metal. Επιλογικό άσμα του δίσκου "Odin Owns Ye All". Κυκλοφόρησε την άνοιξη του 1998. Κρίμα που οι Einherjer δεν μας έδωσαν αρκετά τέτοιας κλάσης τραγούδια...

ΥΓ.4 Η πρώτη εικόνα: πίνακας ζωγραφικής του Γερμανού ζωγράφου και καθηγητή τέχνης Emil Doepler (1855–1922). Τιτλοφορείται "An eagle and a waterfall" (1905) με την επεξηγηματική υποσημείωση "after Ragnarök"...

ΥΓ.5 Η δεύτερη εικόνα: πίνακας του Δανού ζωγράφου Lorenz Frølich (1820–1908). Τιτλοφορείται "Líf and Lífþrasir" (1895) και απεικονίζει το "νέο ζευγάρι των πρωτοπλάστων" που αναφέρθηκε παραπάνω. Μία περιγραφή του πίνακα:

«A depiction of Líf and Lífþrasir (1895) by Lorenz Frølich. Líf and Lífþrasir, the only surviving woman and man (respectively) of Ragnarök, stand side by side. Water falls between them, while an eagle nests above it, and greenery intertwines with the entire composition.»
